A healthy BMI means a healthy you, and a healthy baby.

Body Mass Index (BMI)

BMI is a metric measurement of a person’s body fat, obtained by correlating their height and weight.

Why is Body Mass Index Important?

To protect our Surrogates from any foreseeable difficulty and create a wonderful Surrogacy Experience for Intended Parents as well, Omega Family Surrogates use the BMI as an indicator to measure the risk of potential complications that the Surrogate or the baby could face. Omega Family cares for their Surrogates and does everything to ensure their well being as well as the baby’s.

High BMI Risks – High Blood Pressure & Preeclampsia

A high Body Mass Index does increase your chances of high blood pressure because your heart has to pump blood to your whole body. The larger the body, the more effort the heart must exert to do that. If the Surrogate has high blood pressure there is a chance the heart over work causing Preeclampsia. This in turn will require doctors to force birth placing both Surrogate and Baby at risk. The baby could have a high birth weight and the rate of other birth defects rises.

How do I lower my BMI?

To lower your BMI, Omega Family Surrogates recommends the following:

  1. Get an accurate reading of your BMI
  2. Set a realistic weight loss goal, even if it does not meet the Surrogate requirements.  Do what is best for you.
  3. Track your progress
  4. Know how much you move
  5. Weigh yourself regularly
  6. Get Moving
  7. Set Specific Workout Targets
  8. Eat what works for you
  9. Stay Consistent

How do I calculate BMI?

BMI is your weight (in kilograms) over your height squared (in centimeters).  You can find a BMI calculator on the internet, but if you would like to do it yourself, then here is how! To convert your weight in pounds to kilograms, and your height in feet to centimeters you must do the following:

  1. Multiply the weight in pounds by 0.45 (the metric conversion factor)
  2. Multiply the height in inches by 0.025 (the metric conversion factor)
  3. Square the answer from step 2
  4. Divide the answer from step 1 by the answer from step 3

This is your BMI.

You could also use the BMI Calculator from the US Department of Health & Human Services.
